St. Barnabas has cared for 20,000 patients and their families since it first opened its doors in 1973. Since 2006 JPA have assisted in the research and development of their new home in Worthing. Some enabling works finally started on the 2nd February 2009.

The new State of the Art Facility will provide accommodation for 24 in-patients, as well as out-patients and administrative facilities. JPA were appointed at the inception of the project, early enough to assist in the design of the form, materials and passive measures incorporated within the building structure.

The design was optimized in conjunction with RHP Architects by means of detailed calculations, backed up with thermal modeling to analyse daylight, natural ventilation and thermal performance to critical spaces reducing energy consumption and improving internal conditions. Wind modelling was also carried out to ensure occupant comfort to the external areas.

Detailed feasibility studies included the use of a ground source reversible heat pump and a combined heat and power plant (CHP) which proved that it would be cost effective for the scheme due to the high domestic water loads.
