The intention is for the provision of a first class Sports Hall environment for pupils and staff, whilst embracing principles of low energy and sustainable design. John Packer associates were initially appointed to provide a Design Advice service, through the Action Energy initiative managed by the Carbon Trust. This early involvement helped to optimise the form and orientation of the building and subsequently John Packer Associates were appointed to provide the full M, E & P design service.

Having been involved from the start in the design of the building envelope the complexity of the services installations can be reduced. Low energy principles can be adopted. Lighting is to be provided by high efficiency luminaires, controls including pirís and manual operation.

Ventilation is provided by natural means where possible, the form of the building being designed accordingly. Underfloor heating is provided to all areas with the exception of the sports hall which was provided with a more responsive radiant system.

As part of itís drive towards the adoption of sustainable building solutions, and as an education tool, the school/WSCC has requested the installation of a wind generator to be installed. The generator shall be utilised to power the external lighting via an inverter with battery back up.
