Stevenson Square is located in the Northern quarter of Manchester, a major regeneration area in the local plan. The development comprises of high quality open plan, naturally ventilated office space with a public access central arcade at ground floor level.
The client made it clear that the proposed development must be designed and built to the highest standards and should achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.
From the outset the sustainable design principles were embedded in the project and adopted by the design team to maximise the potential for achieving the required ‘Excellent’ rating. The primary intention was to design the building to employ passive methodologies
wherever possible; to design out the need for active mechanical and electrical systems as far as practicable.
To achieve this, the building has a narrow plan with a combination of opening windows and motorised louvers with exposed thermal mass to maintain thermal comfort. All lighting is zoned with daylight and PIR sensors to ensure lights remain off when not required. Roof gardens have been included to provide external garden space in this city centre location to enhance the health and wellbeing of building occupants.
JPA provided the BREEAM Assessment for the project, driving the team forward to ensure the design achieved the ‘Excellent’ rating.
